History

The Brittany comes from France where they are thought to have originated from in the province of Brittany – therefore the name. They are sometimes referred to as the Brittany spaniel – but because of their hunting habits, they are more frequently referred to as simply the Brittany.

Characteristics

Brittany spaniels just love water. They are described as very welcoming and trustworthy companions, and they do very well in a country setting. They were originally bred for hunting, and these dogs have very natural caring instincts. These dogs are considered to be very popular companion dogs.

Temperament

These dogs are faithful, devoted, happy and keen dogs. Brittanys are dogs that love to play and exercise – and they have plenty of energy. They are very intelligent and obedient, and are also very easy to train. This makes them great for new dog owners as well as for the more experienced. The Brittany loves people and attention, and it is very important to not neglect these dogs. Boredom can lead to negative behaviour. These responsive dogs are always eager to please their owners. They are also very independent, feisty and fun loving dogs. They love to be involved with the fun and the action in the family.

Care

Brittanys have good-looking, soft, feathered coats. You would have to put some effort in, in order to ensure that the coat stays in good state. Their coats should be brushed twice a week, and this will help to remove dead hairs and stop matting. These dogs are also seasonal, medium shedders. During heavier shedding periods you may need to raise the level of grooming. For more detailed info, take a look at the Brittany Spaniel Grooming page.

Training

The Brittany is a calm and stable dog that gets on well with young children. They get along really well with other animals. It is quite important that you socialize these dogs early on. With strangers some can be quite nervous. Their love and caring streak for their families make them very effective watchdogs. They will also l bark to sound an alarm if it is necessary. Some Brittany lines can be shy, and in order to prevent excessive shyness early socialization is needed. logo1-3909208 vote_for_us-1538536
